Introduction: Sutras

Verse for Opening a Sutra
The unsurpassed, profound, and wonderful Dharma,
Is difficult to encounter in hundreds of millions of eons,
I now see and hear it, receive and uphold it,
And I vow to fathom the Tathagata's true meaning.

Between 1962 and 1968, the Venerable Master lectured on the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra, the Vajra Sutra, the Heart Sutra, the Song of Enlightenment by Great Master Yongjia, the Book of Changes, the Sixth Patriarch's Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, and the Amitabha Sutra. In June 1968, at the Buddhist Lecture Hall in San Francisco, the Master began a 96-day Study and Practice Summer Session for students and faculty from the University of Washington in Seattle, during which he lectured on the Shurangama Sutra, as often as four times a day by the end. After the session was over, many of the participants remained in San Francisco to study under the Venerable Master. In November of that same year, he began lecturing on the Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra, the Earth Store Sutra, and the Vajra Sutra. Since then, the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua has lectured on many other Sutras.
